First, you should know that widgets have been available on iPhone for some time, but only with the release of iOS 14 (in 2020) have they expressed their full potential. Initially, widgets could be added, without too much customization, exclusively in the Today view of your iPhone.
However, starting with iOS 14, it is also possible to add widgets to the iPhone home screen and customize their appearance, choosing from three different sizes. In addition, widget "containers", called smart collections, have been introduced, allowing you to collect different widgets within the same container and switch between widgets with a simple swipe.
