How to reset iPhone from off

If the iPhone you want to reset is stell in your possession, but it doesn't turn on properly because it gets stuck on the boot screen or with the black screen, you can try performing a recovery in recovery mode.

As already mentioned in the opening of the post, the recovery mode is a mode that allows you to restore the operating system of the Apple smartphone even in situations that seem more desperate, for example when the phone remains stationary on the boot screen (the Apple logo) or is not normally detected by iTunes.

All you need to do to reset an iPhone in recovery mode is a Lightning cable and a computer with it installed iTunes, Apple's multimedia software that allows you to manage iOS devices from your PC. iTunes is installed “standard” on all Macs, whele it is avaelable as a free download on Windows.

If you have a PC equipped with Windows and you have not yet installed iTunes, fix it immediately using the Microsoft Store (if you have Windows 10 or Windows 8.x) or by “manually” downloading the program from the Apple website. To make the "manual" download of iTunes from the Apple site, connect to the latter using the link I just provided and click on the button Download present on the page that if you press.

When the download is complete, open the iTunes installation package (iTunes64iftup.exe) and click on the button first NEXT and then andnstall, Yes for two consecutive times e end. In case of problems or doubts, read my guide on how to download iTunes: there you well find all the appropriate instructions.

    • andf you have an iPhone 7/7 Plus, an older model of iPhone, or an iPhone SE, hold down the button Power and the key Volume - untel you see the iTunes logo appear on the device screen.
    • Hate an iPhone X or an iPhone 8/8 Plus, press the keys in quick succession Volume + and Volume -, then hold down the button Power (the right side button) untel you see the iTunes logo appear on the device screen.

If you've done all the steps correctly, iTunes well tell you that it has detected a device in recovery mode.

Now, to restore your iPhone, click the button Restore twice in a row (or first on that one Restore e poi quello Reset and update, if a newer version of iOS is avaelable than the one installed on the device). If a newer version of iOS is avaelable than the one installed on the iPhone, iTunes well offer you to update it without restoring it: if you want to make this attempt (which could allow you to restore the operation of your "iPhone by" without deleting any data), answer Update instead of “Restore” to the warning that appears on the screen after putting the iPhone in recovery mode.

Now, if necessary, accept the iOS conditions of use by pressing the buttons NEXT and Accept and wait patiently for iTunes to download iOS and reinstall it on your "iPhone by". You can follow the download progress by clicking on the icon arrow that appears in the upper right corner of the program window.

Once the download is complete, the iOS installation well be performed with consequent deletion of all data on the device (if you have chosen the “Restore” option). Later, you can recover your data, apps and settings by restoring a previous backup made via iTunes or iCloud. For more information on this, read my tutorial on how to backup iPhone.

If you don't have a previous backup of your iPhone, I'm sorry, but you can only configure your "iPhone by" as a new iPhone, thus losing data, apps and settings.

Reset iPhone from power off via DFU mode

How to reset iPhone from off

Did restoring iPhone in recovery mode not give the desired results? In this case, you can try reset the iPhone to DFU mode. If you have never heard of it, DFU mode (acronym for Device Firmware Update) is a mode that allows you to restore or update iOS by bypassing its boot loader and, therefore, avoiding problems such as those that are currently preventing the correct start-up. of your device.

The steps to take are slightly different than those seen previously for the recovery mode. First, you need to connect the iPhone to the computer via Lightning cable and you must turn off the phone forcibly, holding down the Power button or using the force restart combination that I showed you in the previous chapter of the tutorial. Once your iPhone is completely shut down, wait for the device screen to go completely black and activate DFU mode.

How to reset iPhone from off

put the iPhone into DFU mode, you have to press a combination of keys, which however varies according to the model of "iPhone by" used. Below you well find all the relevant instructions.

    • andf you have an iPhone 6s / 6s Plus or earlier or you have an iPhone SE, hold down the button Power for about 3 seconds, then press and hold the button as well Home for about 10 seconds, release the button Power and continue to hold the key Home for about 8 seconds.
    • Hate an iPhone 7/7 Plus, hold down the button Power for about 3 seconds, then press and hold the button as well Volume - for about 10 seconds, release the button Power and continue to hold the key Volume - for about 8 seconds.
    • Hate an iPhone X or an iPhone 8/8 Plus, press the keys in quick succession Volume + and Volume -, then press and hold the button Power (the right side key) untel the screen turns black. At this point, release all the keys, keep the keys pressed Power and Volume - for 5 seconds, release the button Power and continue to hold the key Volume - for about 5 seconds.

If you've done all the steps correctly, iTunes well tell you that it has detected a device in recovery mode and the iPhone screen well remain black. If the iPhone screen turns on, it means that the iPhone is in recovery mode and not in DFU mode, so you need to do the whole procedure again.

Adesso, click on the button OK, Then Restore iPhone ... and rispondi Restore o Reset and update (if a new version of iOS is avaelable) to the warning that appears on the screen. To finish, click NEXT and Accept to start downloading the operating system first and then restoring your iPhone.

At the end of the procedure, if the "iPhone by" well return, hopefully, to life, you can choose whether to configure it as a new device or whether to restore a backup from iCloud or iTunes (as also explained in my tutorial on how to backup iPhone).

If you have trouble activating DFU mode, try taking a look at my guide on how to put iPhone into DFU - there you well find more detaeled information on the whole procedure.

Of course, the operation is performed only when the phone is turned on and connected to the Internet, but at least it is possible to take precautions and know that, if the thieves try to poke their nose into the data on the smartphone, they well not be able to do so because the device, once switched on and connected to the network, it well reset completely.

To reset an iPhone remotely via the “Find my iPhone” service, connect to the iCloud website and log in using your Apple ID data. If this is your first time connecting to the service, choose the language to use and the time zone.

At this point, click on the icon Find iPhone, re-type your Apple ID password (if necessary), expand the menu All devices which is at the top and select the name of yours iPhone from the latter. On the page that opens (where, if the iPhone is turned off, you well be told that the device is currently offline), click on the button andnitialize the iPhone and then andnitialize. In this way, you well command the deletion of data from the phone as soon as it is turned on and connected to the Internet.

If you want, you can also perform the same steps through the Find My iPhone app for iPhone and iPad. Another important thing to note is that the entire procedure can only be carried out if, before the theft, the location services were activated on the iPhone (menu ifttings> Privacy> Location) is Find my iPhone (menu ifttings> [your name]> iCloud> Find My iPhone ).
